SUPPORTING BORDER PLANTS

Wind gusts or heavy downpours during a summer storm make it difficult for heavy-flowering plants not to topple or break. Think of delphinium, asters, lilies, dahlias, hollyhocks, hydrangeas (e.g. Annabella), peonies, lupines, monkshood, verbena, sun eyes... With a sturdy plant support, you give flowers and plants the support they need. This can be done in various ways:

  • Using twigs from the garden crisscrossed among the plants that need support;
  • Smart plant combinations that ensure plants support each other during growth and flowering;
  • Making your own plant supports with old iron rods or bamboo stakes;
  • Buying ready-made plant supports from this online shop :-).

A plant support is quickly overgrown after installation and becomes less noticeable during the blooming season. By choosing a beautiful, durable, and sturdy design, a plant support adds value to your border during the bare seasons and can be used for a long time. Quick and fully dismountable plant supports can be stored compactly in the garden shed after the flowering season. Features that are often partly or completely missing from the offer of traditional garden centres under price pressure.

Don't wait too long to install a plant support. Once flower stems fall, they won’t stand up again! You save yourself a lot of trouble by choosing a plant support that can be easily (and damage-free) installed when border plants have already grown significantly. This way, it is often clearer which flowers and plants will need support. When a plant support is also modularly expandable, it can grow with the plants and flowers. Ensure supported plants can still gently sway with the wind; otherwise, they may still snap.

SUPPORTING CLIMBING PLANTS

Climbing plants naturally need support in their race towards the sun. Think of honeysuckle, clematis, jasmine, nasturtium, passionflower... A climbing frame, column support, or trellis is the solution here:

  • Use a climbing frame for climbing plants when support needs to be placed at the edge of a border, planter, raised bed or against a fence, hedge, or wall;
  • A column support for climbing plants takes up more space in the border and can even occupy the entire planter, but provides more climbing surface and thus more blooms and beauty;
  • With a trellis slate support, you train plants to grow more horizontally and less tall.

SUPPORTING VEGETABLES

There’s nothing better and healthier than eating vegetables from your own garden. Vegetables that grow upward need climbing support. Think of tomatoes, cucumbers, gherkins, pole beans, peas... Always sow or plant climbing vegetables at the back and north side of the vegetable garden, planter or raised bed This ensures they don’t cast shade on other, shorter vegetables. Always make sure you can easily reach the fruits with both hands through the support. Choose an extendable plant support, climbing frame, or column support:

  • The specially designed extendable plant support provides enough climbing support for an individual tomato plant, cucumber, or gherkin;
  • A climbing frame is ideal for growing pole beans, peas, tomatoes, gherkins, cucumbers... at the edge and north side of your vegetable garden, raised bed, or planter;
  • With a column support, you can create a significant climbing area for a bountiful harvest on a small surface in the garden or planter.

SUPPORTING SMALL FRUIT

Small fruit plants produce super-healthy, tiny flavor bombs in summer. They should definitely be part of your garden, vegetable garden, raised beds, or planters. Think of currants, raspberries, blackberries... With a suitable slate support like this trellis, you provide tying support for the main canes of the small fruit. Avoid using thin wire or too-tight tying material for securing, as this can lead to constriction or injury.

Always leave enough space between the main canes to let light and air penetrate to the heart of the small fruit plants. These are essential conditions for successful small fruit cultivation! Light promotes good fruit formation and ripening. Good air circulation dries the plants quickly after a heavy rain, reducing the chance of mold.
